Manchester United have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Turkish club Trabzonspor for the loan of goalkeeper André Onana. The deal, however, still hinges on the player’s approval before it can be finalized.
Onana’s Struggles at Old Trafford
Since joining Manchester United in 2023 from Inter Milan, André Onana has endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford. Despite starting as Erik ten Hag’s first-choice goalkeeper last season, the 29-year-old has lost his place this campaign.
So far, Onana has not started any of United’s opening three Premier League games, with Altay Bayındır stepping in between the posts. His only competitive appearance this season came in a Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, where he featured in the penalty shootout loss.
Injuries during pre-season and inconsistent performances last term have further raised doubts over his future at the club.
Arrival of Senne Lammens Adds More Competition
United’s recent £18.4 million signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp has intensified the competition for the No. 1 spot. With Bayındır currently first choice and veteran Tom Heaton still in the squad, Onana has slipped further down the pecking order.
The Cameroonian international had previously vowed to fight for his place, but the opportunity of regular football at Trabzonspor could tempt him into making the move.
Turkish Window Still Open
While the English transfer window closed on September 1, clubs in Turkey still have until September 12 to finalize signings. This has allowed Trabzonspor, who are currently second in the Turkish Super Lig, to make a late move for Onana.
The proposed loan would see Onana spend the remainder of the season in Turkey, with the chance to rebuild confidence and play consistent first-team football.
Manchester United’s Goalkeeping Situation
Letting Onana leave could leave Manchester United short of experience in goal. Bayındır has shown flashes of ability but remains untested at the highest level of English football, while Lammens is young and relatively unproven. Heaton, meanwhile, is in the twilight of his career and unlikely to be a long-term solution.
Ten Hag will therefore have a big decision to make—whether to keep Onana as insurance or allow him to leave in search of regular playing time.
