President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a new policy granting lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during the 2025 Ministerial Retreat on Thursday, where he highlighted reforms and achievements under his ministry.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF PO Abraham, the minister praised President Tinubu for prioritizing officer welfare.
“In recognition of the welfare of senior officers, the minister announced that any officer retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller/Comptroller/Commandant-General will now receive lifetime salary benefits, a policy graciously approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.
Tunji-Ojo also revealed that the ministry had cleared a long-standing backlog of promotions, with over 50,000 officers promoted in the last two years. Going forward, he said promotions would be tied strictly to capacity and performance.
The minister further announced the development of new training manuals and the construction of a world-class Fire Academy, modeled after global institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.
He also stressed the ministry’s commitment to workplace wellness, pledging stronger support for officers’ mental health.
In addition, Tunji-Ojo urged the Federal Fire Service to seek partnerships with the private sector, saying such collaborations are vital for improving service delivery, infrastructure, and modern firefighting operations in Nigeria.
