The Rivers State House of Assembly has confirmed that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu, is progressing steadily and in line with constitutional provisions.
This was disclosed on Friday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, in an official statement addressing recent public speculations surrounding the matter.
According to George, the Assembly is acting strictly within the framework of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). He revealed that formal notices of allegations of gross misconduct, brought under Section 188 of the Constitution, have already been served on both the Governor and his Deputy by the Speaker of the House. The Assembly, he said, is now awaiting their responses as required by law.
“The House of Assembly is constitutionally empowered to stand in defence of the people and ensure that there are no infractions on the Constitution by the Governor, Deputy Governor or any officer of the Rivers State Government,” George stated, adding that lawmakers remain committed to carrying out their duties without fear or favour.
He also condemned what he described as deliberate attempts by certain individuals and media platforms to mislead the public by spreading false information that the impeachment process has been suspended or abandoned.
“We are aware that some persons are circulating misleading narratives aimed at causing disaffection between the House and well-meaning Nigerians. I call on the public to disregard such claims. The process is ongoing and has not been halted in any way,” he said.
Speaking with the permission of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, George assured the people of Rivers State that the lawmakers would not be intimidated by what he called “cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not mean well for Nigeria’s democracy.”
He concluded by expressing appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their prayers and encouragement, while also thanking stakeholders and leaders across the country for their support.
“We remain grateful to all democrats who believe in the Nigerian project. May God continue to bless Rivers State and Nigeria,” the statement added.
