The Lagos State Police Command has launched a full investigation into a viral video showing students of Excel College, Ejigbo, Lagos, smoking, drinking, and dancing inside a school hostel.
The disturbing footage, which reportedly took place in April 2025 at the boys’ hostel of the private institution, resurfaced online this week and has sparked outrage among parents and the public. Many Nigerians expressed concerns over the lack of supervision in schools and the moral implications of such behavior among students.
Police Take Over Investigation
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, to take over the case from the Ejigbo Police Division, which had earlier questioned the school principal.
In a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the school’s principal, who also doubles as the proprietor, revealed that the students in the viral video had already graduated. Despite this, the police emphasized that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed the SCID to take over the case for a comprehensive investigation. The principal clarified that the students in the viral video had already graduated. Nonetheless, the school is cooperating fully with investigators to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this incident are properly addressed,” Adebisi said.
Police Stress Need for Discipline in Schools
The police spokesperson further noted that the command was treating the incident seriously due to its potential impact on morality and discipline among young people.
He urged school authorities, parents, and guardians to step up their supervisory roles to prevent such misconduct from escalating into more dangerous behavior.
“The police will not tolerate negligence on the part of school authorities. Every stakeholder has a responsibility to instil the importance of good behaviour, moral values, and social discipline in young people. Misconducts of this nature, if left unchecked, can snowball into bigger problems that disrupt the peace of society,” Adebisi warned.
Ongoing Probe and Public Involvement
While confirming that the investigation is ongoing, the police assured that the outcome would be made public. The command also appealed to Lagos residents to report suspicious or disturbing activities in schools to the authorities.
“The Command remains steadfast in ensuring peace, security, and orderliness across Lagos State. We encourage parents, guardians, and community leaders to work hand in hand with schools and the police to raise responsible youths who will contribute positively to society,” Adebisi added.
