The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the state of emergency in Rivers State will expire on September 18, 2025.
Wike made this known on Saturday after casting his vote in the ongoing local government election in the state.
He noted that once the emergency rule ends, the Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to resume its legislative duties.
President Bola Tinubu had declared a six-month state of emergency in Rivers to avert a political crisis, suspending Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the State House of Assembly.
Speaking on the elections, Wike described the process as peaceful and successful:
“As far as we are concerned, this election is peaceful, people are trooping out and at the end of the day the election has been conducted successfully and peacefully. I do know that by September 18, the state of emergency will expire and the state assembly will come back to their job and we will have a government at the grassroots level.”
He added that with both state and local government representatives now in place, “the coast is clear” for normal governance to resume once the emergency rule lapses.
