The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fired back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent remark that President Bola Tinubu is “competing with Buhari in incompetence,” describing the comment as laughable and hypocritical.
In a statement on Tuesday, APC’s Lagos spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said it was ironic for Obasanjo—whose administration, he claimed, was marred by wasted opportunities, failed reforms, and political arrogance—to accuse anyone of incompetence.
Oladejo pointed to the billions of dollars reportedly sunk into the power sector under Obasanjo without results, his failed third-term bid which nearly caused a constitutional crisis, and what he described as widespread corruption during his presidency.
According to him, “If Nigeria is still recovering from years of structural decay, Obasanjo bears a huge share of the blame. The rot didn’t start with Buhari, and it certainly isn’t being deepened by Tinubu—it started long before, under leaders who now pretend to be saints.”
Defending President Tinubu’s leadership, the APC spokesman said the administration’s tough economic decisions—including fuel subsidy removal, overhaul of the foreign exchange system, and efforts to confront inefficiencies—were bold steps, not signs of incompetence.
He accused Obasanjo of bitterness and attention-seeking, noting that the former president has a history of attacking sitting presidents after leaving office.

“We strongly advise the former president to show some decorum, especially at his age. Elders are expected to advise, not agitate. If he has nothing constructive to say, silence would serve him—and the country—better than these outbursts,” Oladejo said.
The party stressed that President Tinubu is not in competition with Obasanjo or any other past leader, but is focused on driving reforms to put Nigeria on a path of recovery and growth.
