Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, paid a condolence visit to the family of late former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State. His visit comes a day after the burial, which he was unable to attend due to flight restrictions.

Speaking during the visit, Obi explained, “It was difficult to come here yesterday because there were no flights. Even if you had a flight, you couldn’t land at Katsina Airport. It was all closed because of the number of dignitaries attending the burial.”

He emphasized that mourning the late president goes beyond the day of burial. “It is believed that the mourning continues today and tomorrow. Whoever comes today or tomorrow is still part of the mourning,” he said.

Obi fondly recalled an encounter he had with Buhari during his campaign trail. “I remember his words to this day: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ I believe he did his best within his capacity, and his appeal to care for the poor has always stayed with me,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of national service and legacy, Obi said, “We all have to learn how to serve our country, knowing that one day we will be called back by our creator.”

The visit drew reactions online, including a post by former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, who, despite years of political differences, publicly appreciated Obi. “We sincerely appreciate Peter Obi for finding time to visit Daura to console with the family of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” Ahmad wrote on X, sharing a photo where he humbly bowed in respect to Obi during their first-ever meeting.
